Candidates for the IFPSM Hans Ovelgönne - Purchasing Research Award may come from universities, companies or associations, and are invited to give proof of their outstanding contribution to the development of purchasing, materials management and logistics through research and development studies and works.
This award is presented annually to one or two persons, recognised by an awards committee as having rendered an outstanding contribution to our profession.
Hans Ovelgönne was born in Germany in 1909. He worked for many years in the chemical industry at the German company Glanzstoff AG, based in Wuppertal. He was one of the founders of BME, the German purchasing association and a member there since 1954. Ovelgönne served as BME President 1964-1966 and has been an honorary member since 1961. He served as Chairman and President of the European Federation of Purchasing (EFP) 1968 to 1972. He was Vice President of the International Federation of Purchasing (IFP) 1972 to 1974 and was the first President of the International Federation of Purchasing and Materials Management (IFPSM) 1974 to 1977.

In 1988 the BME created the BME - Wissenschaftpreis/Hans Ovelgönne Preis with EU 5,000, annually awarded for a dissertation concerning the theme, Scientific developments in the field of Materials Management. Hans Ovelgönne has devoted his life to his family and to the Purchasing Profession.
